Observing All Saints Day On Costa Del Sol Holidays

by admin on Nov.27, 2011, under Vacations

Being a predominantly Catholic country, the Spanish take their religious festivals very seriously; none more so than All Saints Day or Todos Santos, which this year falls on Tuesday November 1st. This is when the Spanish remember those who have fallen. Make sure you bear in mind that this is a national holiday, so a lot of the country’s shops will be closed. Those taking Costa del Sol holidays might want to stock up on provisions before the day kicks off. It will be a manic day of travel the day before, as employees are allowed to finish work early so that they have enough time to reach their families. It would be advisable to stay off the roads during this time.

In order to neutralise the pagan festival of Halloween, Popes Gregory III and IV moved the event from the 13th May to 1st November. It was believed on that day that the boundaries between the living and the dead disappeared so the church linked the pagan festival to All Saints Day. Initially it was a time of fasting and holding vigils and remembering the Christian martyrs but over the years it has evolved into the present custom of remembering dead relatives. It’s a day charged with emotion. Family members meet up, for probably the only time that year. It would be a very unique experience going on Fuerteventura holidays at this time of year – just figure out if it’s your cup of tea.

Traditionally people used to go and see the play ‘Don Juan Tenorio’ being performed. It’s a custom that is still carried on today and several of the Spanish TV channels broadcast it. It’s a drama with a religious message. Don Juan has to choose between heaven and hell as he reminisces in a graveyard over his betrayal of his dead lover. There’s no denying it, Costa Dorada holidays are a fantastic experience this time of year, you just need to double-check that this is the type of holiday for you.
