A Day Trip To Cairo From Sharm El Sheikh

by admin on Aug.20, 2010, under Uncategorized

Every year, holidaymakers and visitors travel to the popular destination of Sharm from Britain. They come to relax by the beach or pool. Some want to scuba dive and other spend hours snorkelling on surrounding reefs. There are a lot of excursions to be had for holidaymakers and visitors to Sharm el Sheikh and one of the more favourite ones is a day trip to the capital of Egypt, Cairo.

Cairo is home to the world notable Pyramids of Giza and the Sphinx but the day trips to Cairo provide a great deal more than merely these age-old monuments. From Sharm, visitors can either travel to Cairo by road or air. Either way, its an early start with road excursions departing at roughly two in the morning and flights at close to five in the morning. It all means a long day ahead but it is genuinely worth the effort.

Itineraries may vary on trip to trip but as a rule gets going with a visit to the Cairo Museum or to give it’s correct title “The Museum of Egyptian Antiquities in Cairo”. Nearly all of the morning is spent here and it is packed with some desirable pieces. Some of the more magnificent treasures are those which were discovered in the tomb of the boy Pharaoh Tutankhamen including the popular gold and blue death mask. There are a good number of items of furniture and ornaments and one thing that is apparent is how well the colours are preserved in a number of the items taking into account they are thousands of years old. Bear in mind there is far too much to explore in the museum so tourists have to decide upon the areas they want to look at.

Coming from the museum, the group is taken down to the River for a meal aboard a river boat. There is a fair choice of food and for entertainment there are also dancers. On the other hand, you’re able to watch the skyline dotted with various Cairo hotels and other landmarks pass by as you sail up and back to your departure point.

The next item on the itinerary are the Pyramids of Giza. Looking at a lot of photos, you can be forgiven for thinking the Pyramids are in the midst of the desert but that isn’t the situation. The Pyramids and Sphinx are just on the edge of Cairo. It is impossible not to be astounded after you get up close to the Great Pyramid due to the actual stature of the it. It is possible to have ample time here to stroll round the Pyramids and there are no lack of local people attempting to sell you a range of mementos or rides on their camels. There are plenty of chances to take pics before the tour bus drives you a bit further down to the Sphinx. Again, you will be offered the chance to get all sorts of souvenirs and there are further photo opportunities. Yet, the Sphinx has not worn nearly as well as the Pyramids which means you can’t get as near to it. It is late afternoon as the excursion leaves Cairo’s most celebrated tourist attractions but there remains to be time for two further stops.

The first of these visits is at a perfume shop where your are invited to try a number of the a lot of perfumes the shop offers. Next the tour bus begins to head back to the airport with one last stop on the way. Papyrus is the paper like material produced by the historic Egyptians from the pith of the Papyrus reed. It was used to write on but these days, it is a widespread tourist souvenir, mostly with images of historic Egyptian gods and similar images. At the Papyrus shop, there is a wide range of Papyrus available and tourists can also enjoy a demonstration of how current day Papyrus is created.

The tour coach leaves and the tour party to Cairo is over. The excursion now heads back to the airport for the flight back to Sharm el Sheikh or the road journey. The day tours to Cairo from Sharm el Sheikh are quite tiring but are good value. For travellers staying in Sharm, it is the perfect way to view several of the points of interest of Cairo without actually staying there.
